First portable, containerized electrolyzer
The H2SKID project has been launched with the objective of developing a 1.25 MW experimental portable electrolyzer based on AEM/PEM technology, conceived as an enabling solution for supplying green hydrogen to industrial end users.
Led by SARRALLE as the coordinating entity, the project also brings together 10 leading companies across the entire hydrogen value chain and stands out as a unique initiative in Euskadi aimed at accelerating industrial decarbonization.
In Euskadi, renewable hydrogen has become one of the key strategic levers for advancing industrial decarbonization. In this context, one of the most promising pathways is the progressive replacement of natural gas with green hydrogen in high-temperature industrial processes, such as those found in steelmaking, foundries, the paper industry, glass manufacturing, cement production, and petrochemicals. However, for this transition to be viable, it is essential to ensure a sufficient hydrogen supply to enable demonstrative testing under real operating conditions. Currently, the lack of pipeline infrastructure from centralized green hydrogen production plants limits the ability to conduct such trials within industrial facilities.
The H2SKID project addresses this need through the design and construction of a portable, containerized electrolyzer intended to act as enabling infrastructure for the direct supply of green hydrogen to industrial end users. This system will make it possible to carry out long-duration test campaigns, which are essential to validate the operation of industrial equipment powered by hydrogen. In addition, the project includes advanced research into key electrolyzer technologies and their balance-of-plant (BoP) systems, strengthening a robust and competitive value chain in hydrogen production.
The H2SKID electrolyzer is conceived as a compact, modular, plug-and-play experimental platform, integrated into two containerized modules: one dedicated to hydrogen production through electrolysis and the other to hydrogen compression and storage. The solution will be compatible with both AEM and PEM electrolysis technologies, providing high technological flexibility. The system will also operate as a test bench for the validation of critical components of both the electrolyzer stack and the hydrogen compressor.
The H2SKID solution will be validated in a real industrial environment, specifically in the ladle preheating burner area and/or the tunnel furnace at the ArcelorMittal Sestao plant, ensuring the practical relevance of the results obtained. Upon completion of the project, H2SKID will be established as a reference scientific-technological platform to foster the development of the hydrogen sector in Euskadi and accelerate industrial decarbonization.

H2SKID is a strategic multi-year industrial research collaboration project (2025–2027) involving the following organizations: Sarralle (coordinator), ABC Compresores, ArcelorMittal Sestao, Erreka, Flubetech, Mugape, Sener, Team Group Engineering, Torraval, Tubos Reunidos Group, and ZGR Corporación. The project is also supported by ABC Tech, Tecnalia, and the R&D unit of ZGR Corporación as agents of the Basque Network for Science, Technology and Innovation (RVCTI), as well as BASQUENERGY Cluster for communication and dissemination activities.
H2SKID is funded by the Department of Industry, Energy Transition and Sustainability of the Basque Government (HAZITEK 2025 Program) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF 2021–2027).
